LECA 101: How Clay Balls Are Changing the Way We Grow Houseplants

LECA Balls For Houseplants - Ed's Plant Shop

What is LECA?

LECA stands for Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate—tiny clay balls that hold water while keeping roots oxygenated. Instead of growing in soil, plants grow in these clay pebbles with a water reservoir below. The result? Happier roots, fewer pests, and way less guesswork when it comes to watering.

🌱 Why Plant Lovers are Switching to LECA

Fewer Pest Problems: No soil = fewer fungus gnats and other unwanted guests.

Watering Made Easy: LECA holds moisture but also lets roots breathe.

Cleaner & Sleeker: Perfect for glass jars, modern planters, and hydroponic displays.

Root Health Boost: Plants grow stronger, more resilient root systems.

How to Get Started with LECA

  1. Rinse your LECA balls thoroughly to remove dust.
  2. Pre-soak them for 24 hours.
  3. Place your plant in a net pot or container (we have a great selection, if you're looking for one!) and fill around the roots with LECA.
  4. Add water to just below the roots, creating a reservoir.

💡 Pro Tip: Use a fertilizer formulated for hydro or semi-hydro growing to keep your plant nourished. We love Plant Juice by our friends over at Elm Dirt
