AI Plant Prompts Gone Wild - When Bots Can't Do Botany

Ed's Plant Shop - Our Talent Isn't Graphic Design!

At the plant shop, we love that each one of our team has a colorful background of experience that they bring through the door every day. E-commerce, horticulture, and accounting saavy are our serious strong points. Graphic design, however, isn't one of them. As a still growing shop, we don't have a huge budget to hire outsiders, so we lean into the tools that are available to us. In this case, AI!

Needless to say, the bots that churn our inquiries, although we feel like they're pretty clear, don't know bunk about botany. These results were so humorous, we felt the need to share them with you!

We asked AI to generate images for:

"Houseplant looking at a seed catalogue for annuals"

We're not sure where "turkey-faced" or "alopecia" came from, but AI thought it would look better.

"Two houseplants on a counter needing water"

Half of the task was successful, however, that poor pot on the left seems to have misplaced his plant!

"Houseplant looking at laptop reading a blog on fertilizer"

At least AI got the "Laptop" prompt correct!

"Create a mascot for an online plant shop with a plant-y vibe"

Apparently robots have chest made of a tube tv and grows some sort of vegetative chest hair?

"Houseplant looking at a blog with incognito glasses on"

This one really puts the "oh" in T-oh-piary.
"Anthropomorphic fern for an online plant collection of ferns"
(this one provided us with two completely bizarre options!)
"Oh great fern, what big eyes you have!"
Wait, isn't this the same creature that told us to eat our vegetables growing up?

"Create an image that shows how super our substrates are"
Saving soil structure one substrate at a time. Just send the soil signal!

We also asked what these clever plant-mascot names might look like as characters. It did not disappoint!

"Plant Whisperer"
We're thinking there could be an entire Quinten Tarantino movie themed around this one AI-generated image.
Phil O. Dendron
He's sort of handsome, in a weird, AI-generated way.
Green Thumby
Person chilling in a pot next to a giant carrot? Check. That was not the assignment, though.
Bo Tany
Somewhere between the Garden Of Eden and Dolly Parton, Bo Tany was created.
Bob Mossy
Sesame Street called, they want their creature back!
