A humidifier can help raise relative humidity around tropical houseplants when indoor air becomes unusually dry. Whether one is useful depends on the plant species, room size, temperature, airflow and the humidity your space already has.
When a humidifier may help
Some ferns, Calathea, Maranta, tropical aroids and orchids may benefit when room humidity is consistently below their preferred range. Crispy edges or poor growth can have several causes, so measure conditions instead of assuming humidity is always the problem.
What to compare
- Coverage and output: Match the unit to the room instead of relying on plant count alone.
- Monitoring: Use a hygrometer to see whether humidity is changing where the plants grow.
- Cleaning: Follow the manufacturer’s water and cleaning guidance to reduce mineral buildup.
