String of Turtles Care Guide:

Light: Ideally, String of Turtles should be placed in bright, indirect light. A windowsill that receives plenty of light but is shielded from direct sunlight is a good option. East-facing windows are often a great choice as they provide bright light in the morning without the intense heat of afternoon sun.

If your window is north facing, you may need to supplement its light with artificial lighting. Full-spectrum grow lights can provide the right balance of light for healthy growth. It's important to note that String of Turtles can adapt to lower light conditions, but this can cause the plant to become leggy and stretched out as it reaches for more light. To keep your plant looking full and healthy, aim to provide it with plenty of bright, indirect light.

Water:

String of Turtles is considered a succulent plant, so it requires infrequent watering. This makes it a great low-maintenance plant for indoor gardeners. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it's important to be mindful of how much water you're giving your plant. Water only when the soil is dry: String of Turtles prefers to dry out between watering sessions. Check the soil with your finger to see if it's dry to the touch before watering.

You will also find that you need to  adjust your watering frequency based on the temperature and humidity of your home. In the summer, when temperatures are higher and the air is drier, you may need to water more frequently. In the winter, when temperatures are cooler and the air is more humid, you may need to water less often.

If you worry that you're an over-waterer, you might consider a moisture meter. Ed's Plant Shop has a great selection of moisture meters found below!

Soil:

String of Turtles plants require a well-draining potting soil that provides good aeration and allows excess water to flow out of the pot easily. It's important to avoid using heavy soils or those that retain too much moisture, as they can cause the roots of your String of Turtles plant to become waterlogged and rot. Also, be sure to use a pot with drainage holes to allow excess water to drain away from the roots and prevent water buildup in the soil.

We carry a perfect soil for String of Turtles here. We recommend the desert blend, it drains and is perfect for the root system of your String Of Turtles plant.

Temperature:

String of Turtles plants prefer temperatures that range between 60-80°F (15-27°C) during the day and around 55-65°F (13-18°C) at night. They can tolerate slightly lower temperatures, but it's important to avoid exposing them to temperatures below 50°F (10°C) or frost, as this can cause damage to the leaves and stems of the plant.

It's also important to avoid placing your String of Turtles plant in areas with extreme temperature fluctuations, such as near windows that receive direct sunlight or in drafty areas near doors or air vents. These conditions can stress the plant and lead to leaf drop or other issues.

Fertilizer:

Fertilizing your String of Turtles plant is important to promote healthy growth and keep the plant looking its best.

During the active growing season, which is typically in the spring and summer months, you can fertilize your plant once a month with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer that is formulated for houseplants. Dilute the fertilizer to half the recommended strength, and water your plant thoroughly with the solution, taking care not to let the fertilizer solution sit in the saucer or pot for too long.

We strongly suggest using our special formulated all-purpose plant food from France. It's easy to use, dilute and will be sure to make your String of Turtles very happy.
