Why Choose an Indoor Hanging Plant?
Hanging plants make it easy to add greenery to rooms where tabletops and floors are already crowded. Their trailing stems draw the eye upward, soften empty walls, and create a fuller, more layered indoor display.
Many trailing houseplants are also adaptable and easy to maintain. Pothos, Heartleaf Philodendron, and Scindapsus can tolerate a range of household conditions, while Hoya and colorful Tradescantia varieties add distinctive foliage and texture to brighter spaces.
Display your plant in a hanging basket, macramé hanger, wall-mounted planter, or elevated pot. Many varieties can also be trained to climb a trellis or moss pole as they mature.
Popular Types of Hanging Plants
-
Pothos — One of the easiest hanging houseplants for beginners. Choose from Golden, Neon, Marble Queen, Cebu Blue, and other trailing varieties.
-
Philodendron — Heart-shaped leaves and flexible vines make trailing Philodendrons ideal for shelves, hanging baskets, and plant hooks.
-
Hoya — Also called wax plants, Hoyas are loved for their thick foliage, trailing growth, and clusters of fragrant flowers when mature.
-
Scindapsus — These elegant trailing aroids feature velvety leaves with silver markings and perform best in bright, indirect light.
-
Tradescantia — Fast-growing plants with colorful foliage in shades of green, pink, purple, cream, and silver.
-
Peperomia — Compact trailing varieties such as String of Turtles and Ruby Cascade are excellent for smaller shelves and hanging planters.
How to Choose the Right Hanging Plant
For beginners: Start with Pothos or Heartleaf Philodendron. Both are forgiving, adaptable, and easy to prune when their vines become too long.
For lower-light rooms: Consider green Pothos, Heartleaf Philodendron, or Scindapsus. They will grow best with some indirect light but are more adaptable than many flowering or highly variegated plants.
For bright windows: Hoya, Tradescantia, and variegated trailing plants generally maintain their color and grow more vigorously in bright, indirect light.
For smaller spaces: Compact Peperomia and young trailing plants work well in smaller pots without overwhelming a shelf, kitchen, or home office.
Hanging Plant Care
Light: Most hanging plants prefer bright, indirect light. Place them near an east- or west-facing window, or a few feet back from a brighter south-facing window. Avoid prolonged direct afternoon sun unless the variety is known to tolerate it.
Water: Check the soil before watering rather than following a fixed schedule. For many tropical hanging plants, allow the top inch or two of soil to dry before watering thoroughly. Let excess water drain completely before rehanging the plant.
Drainage: Use a pot with drainage holes whenever possible. Decorative hanging planters without drainage can hold excess moisture and increase the risk of root rot.
Humidity and temperature: Most trailing houseplants grow well in average indoor temperatures between approximately 65–80°F. Tropical varieties may appreciate moderate humidity, but regular misting does not provide a meaningful long-term increase in humidity.
Pruning: Trim long, sparse, or uneven vines just above a leaf node. Regular pruning encourages fuller growth, and many cuttings can be propagated in water or potting mix.
