Temperature:

Phalaenopsis orchids thrive in temperatures that mimic their native tropical habitats. Generally, a temperature range of 65°F to 80°F  during the day and a slight drop to around 60°F to 65°F at night is optimal. Avoid exposing them to drastic temperature fluctuations, drafts, or cold windowsills.

If you're uncertain about how cool or drafty your windowsill gets, you can test by placing a candle on the windowsill. If the flame dances and doesn't look like a stable flame, you've got a drafty window!

Light:

Phalaenopsis orchids prefer bright, indirect light. Place them near an east or west-facing window where they can receive gentle morning or afternoon sunlight without direct exposure. Too much direct sunlight can lead to leaf scorching, while insufficient light can inhibit their blooming potential.

If natural light is limited, consider supplementing with artificial grow lights to provide the necessary intensity and duration. At Ed's Plant Shop, we offer a great variety of grow lights and accessories! We can happily assist you with the best choice of grow lights for your growing set up!

Humidity:

Phalaenopsis orchids appreciate moderate to high humidity levels, similar to their native tropical environments. Ideally, aim for humidity levels between 50% and 70%. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing the orchids on trays filled with water and pebbles (ensuring the pots do not sit in the water), or grouping them together to create a microclimate. Misting can also help, but avoid misting the flowers directly to prevent damage.

Fertilizing:

Look for a balanced orchid fertilizer formulated specifically for epiphytic orchids like Phalaenopsis. These fertilizers typically have a ratio of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), such as 20-20-20 or 10-10-10. In general, fertilize your Phalaenopsis orchid every two to four weeks during the active growing season (spring and summer). Reduce or stop fertilizing during the winter months when the orchid enters a dormant phase.

At Ed's Plant Shop in Brooklyn, New York, we offer a great, well balanced orchid fertilizer that is sure to keep your Orchid looks lovely.
