Choose a Philodendron by How It Grows
Philodendron is a diverse genus, and two plants with the same genus name can occupy a room very differently. Some trail, some climb, and others grow as compact self-heading plants. Choosing by growth habit helps you plan the right shelf, support or floor space.
1. Philodendron Brasil — Trailing or Climbing
Brasil has heart-shaped foliage with chartreuse variegation. Let it cascade from a shelf or train it upward on a support. Stronger indirect light generally helps maintain clearer variegation.
2. Philodendron Brandtianum — Climbing or Vining
Brandtianum is known for silver-patterned foliage. It can vine from a container, but support can create a more vertical habit.
3. Philodendron Micans — Trailing or Climbing
Micans has velvety foliage that changes appearance with the light. It works well hanging, but can also be trained upward.
4. Philodendron Silver Stripe — Trailing or Climbing
Silver Stripe is a variegated heartleaf-type Philodendron. Its vines can cascade or be guided around a trellis.
5. Philodendron Birkin — Upright / Self-Heading
Birkin is useful when you want Philodendron foliage without long vines. It stays more upright and works on a table or plant stand while young.
